Musical Intervals Tutor : Home

The Musical Intervals Tutor is a study aid to help you learn the sounds of the basic music intervals from minor second to perfect octave.

The key to recognizing intervals is repeated listening and singing back. To go to the interval study page, click Listen to Intervals.

If you would like to test your skill at identifying intervals, click Take Interval Test 1 (beginner), or Take Interval Test 2 (more advanced).

What inspired this site?

As a graduate student and teaching assistant for an undergraduate theory class at Stanford University, and then as an ear training instructor at Foothill College in Los Altos CA, I very much enjoyed teaching intervals and other musicianship topics. This site is an homage to my music teaching days, and I hope you will find it useful. — Madeline Salocks

Musical Intervals Tutor : Listen to Intervals

For each interval, use the players directly under the notation images.

Listen to the interval with the pitches played together, ascending, and descending.

Association with a familiar tune can be helpful for memorizing the sound of an interval. The tunes listed just below each interval group begin with that interval (the first 2 notes are the interval, unless otherwise indicated).
