Dear Subscriber:

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Research Notes, our electronic newsletter for the Television & Cable Factbook and the Advanced TV Factbook Online subscribers.

We're hard at work updating the million or so data points in the new 2011 print edition (our 66th!) which will be published in December.

There's special excitement – here and among subscribers – about our vastly expanded and improved online database edition, which we've renamed the the Advanced TV Factbook Online. The database now includes – for the first time anywhere – information on over 250 telco TV and IPTV providers. Subscribers can simultaneously search across this new data along with our unrivalled cable and TV station datasets. Premium subscribers can export their query results.

We're changing as fast as the mass video transmission industry. Last year the big news was the conversion of all commercial TV stations digital last summer, a transition fully documented in our current data.

This year the most significant changes are in the telco/IPTV industry.

Here's a snapshot, derived from our latest research:

Telco/IPTV

  • Total communities operating with broadband and video services: 3,532
  • Total franchises granted: 1,970
  • Total trials under way: 4
  • Total planned service: 31
  • Broadband/video service updates or changes in the past 6 months: 1,310
  • Telephone service updates or changes in the past 6 months: 374
  • Cable systems that have converted to IPTV: 594

Or, from a different point of view:

Cable

  • Systems that have converted to IPTV: 594
  • Systems sold in the past 6 months: 17
  • Ownership updates or changes in the past 6 months: 488
  • System telephone service updates or changes in the past 6 months: 1,595

TV

  • Commercial and Public/Educational TV station sales granted by the FCC in the past 6 months: 127
  • Low Power TV/Translator station sales granted by the FCC in the past 6 months: 171

Sincerely,

Michael Taliaferro
